Biobased plastic
Bio-based plastics is a big family, consisting of several generations:
1st generation bio-based plastics: produced from biomass, for example vegetable oils, starch and sugar. Products that will typically also be used as food for humans and animals.
2nd generation bio-based plastics: produced from non-food biomass, which includes wood, agricultural and forestry by-products and waste, and waste from the production of vegetable oils.
3rd generation bio-based plastics: produced from non-food and soil-free agriculture, where sugars and oils are extracted from microalgae, bacteria and yeast fungi, among others. Organic waste from households and wastewater can also be used in production.
